Endodontics is the field of dentistry dealing with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the dental pulp. Endodontic therapy (or a Root Canal) is a treatment designed to save diseased or injured teeth.
If the nerve of a tooth (or pulp) becomes diseased or infected, Root Canal Therapy is necessary. In such cases the nerve of the tooth must be removed. Previously, extraction was the only option available; today, however, every possible step is taken to preserve all teeth. Through Root Canal Treatment the nerve of the tooth may be detached; saving the tooth structure and eliminating the pain.
To conclude if Root Canal Treatment is necessary, x-rays would be taken at your dental consultation. After which point, we will arrange a series of appointments for your treatment.
In most cases a root canal treatment will take two appointments – a preparation appointment at the end of which an antibiotic preparation is left within the root system to promote healing. One month later the tooth is then filled, providing the tooth is pain free. After the root filling is completed the tooth will need a high quality restoration to complete the bacterial seal of the root canal seal. Most commonly a crown will be recommended, especially for posterior teeth.
